Here on the Bay in Sausalito, we had a few weeks of an unusually early summer in July. Our typical Indian Summer will kick in during September and October. "Indian Summer" is a term we've heard our whole life here, but where did it come from?
The term "Indian Summer" has its roots in North America, with the earliest known reference dating back to 1778. This reference was made by French-American writer, J. Hector St.
John de Crèvecœur, in a letter where he described a warm, hazy period in autumn. The term likely reflects the practices of Native Americans, who utilized this warm spell for hunting and gathering before winter.
