I have memories of chambray shirts since I was a wee lad. My maternal grandfather, Beachey Beaumont Young (seriously!) used to wear them everyday to work. Oddly, I only just now wondered where the name of this iconic fabric came from.
Once again, the internet answered my question. The word "chambray" originates from the city of Cambrai in northern France, where the fabric was first made. It evolved from the term "cambric," which referred to a type of fine linen fabric.
