My first year surfing was 1979. Fourteen-year-old Pete thought of nothing else. Sixty-year-old Pete feels the same way. Back then, the day began and ended at Seal Beach. The far north end of the beach is called "Crabs" and it was a perfect place to learn. My friend, Ron, and I found some single fin boards at a garage sale and never looked back.
One summer day, it was crowded, and as I was paddling out, a kid my age was dropping in on his wave. From the look of things, he was headed right for me and I suppose I was in the way. But he steamrolled right into my head as I tried to bail out of the way. The next thing I knew, the pointy nose of his board jousted me right in the ear. My ear lost that battle, so I went to the doctor's office to get stitched up. The lesson then (and now) is to commit to one angle to get out of the way. The surfer will see your commitment and hopefully turn accordingly.
