Raw Selvedge Denim Jeans

I grew up with a pack of friends with various criminal inclinations in their blood. Dan Zorilla was a good kid all the way. The worst thing we ever did together was stealing a pair of nylons from his mom's drawer to link the homemade nunchucks together. She was not pleased but the action on those nylons was smooth and quick. So I hope Dan feels the whole thing was worth it.

Now, Russ P. was different. Long about 8th grade, he pushed the boundary, big time. Once he took the rotor out of his sister's Pinto two door so it wouldn’t start. Thus, leaving it at home and had to walk to our future high school. The plan was to haul ass back to his house, put the rotor back in, start it up and go for a joy ride before she got home. Things went well until we were done and he locked the doors with the keys in it. Time was fleeting so we figured that it would be best to take the back window out, get the keys, then put the window back in. Imagine two 8th graders’ window installation skills in 1979. Things went south from there. I decided to cut bait with this guy and explore a healthier life in the ocean and on the skateboard ramp.

Fast forward to 1996. I am on my way mid-week to catch a surf at Rodeo Beach in Marin County. My legendary boxer dog, Jacqueline, rides shotgun. All is well until I am pulled over for speeding. There I am, just a quarter mile to the beach, waiting for my paperwork. The officer gets back to me and says, "step out of the car and put your hands behind your back".

I did exactly as he instructed and just like that, I am wearing a set of handcuffs and headed off to jail. He was on the phone calling for a tow to move my truck and the humane society to come get my dog. I talked him into cancelling both and asked what this was all about. He said there was a warrant out for my arrest for bailing on my court date for a DUI that went down a year before. I said there must be a mistake since I have never been pulled over or arrested for said crime. I think he believed me but still had to take me in. But this dude opened the door so Jacqueline could jump in and get dropped off at my house on the way to jail. Once there, the cuffs came off but the kindness ended.

The man in charge did a little homework. After 6 hours in lock up, he asked me two things: how tall are you, and do you know a Russ P. I said 6' 4" and yes, I know Russ P. Ol' Russ thought it would be a good idea to use my name back in 1995 when he got pulled over for a DUI, got arrested, but somehow my name was never cleared. Thanks a lot 5' 8" Russ. I owe you one.

This tale is longer than most so if you got through this, just know that who you team up with matters. Making good decisions along the way may keep you out of trouble when you least expect it.

Speaking of partnerships, we could not be happier to cross paths with Brad Bonnema of Grayfords in New Jersey. Brad sent us one of his favorite jackets to replicate and we went to work on this 100+ year old french chore coat. We stayed as true as possible to the original and feel it is a perfect addition to our collection.
